In the Spotlight European Commission Member States lead on the validation of EU Action Plan on Childhood Obesity - The high-level group of the EU Platform on diet, physical activity and health has over the past year been working on an action plan which aims to contribute to halting the worrying rise of childhood obesity by 2020. Key to this objective is the fact that Member States want it to be realistically achievable. The action plan has been validated at the high level group meeting earlier this week. In its now hoped that a political endorsement will come in the form council conclusions under the Greek Presidency in June of this year. Member States are calling for a joint action starting in 2014 to implement the action plan. To read the action plan, click here.

New WHO Europe report shows alarming rates of overweight children— 'Deadly' diet and no exercise makes obesity the 'new norm' across Europe, warns WHO Europe. In a report on childhood obesity launched at the opening of the EU Greek Presidency conference on Nutrition and Physical Activity, WHO revealed that almost 1/3 of children aged 11 and 13 in Europe are overweight. Questionnaires coming up for Diabetes: The Policy Puzzle 2014 - The questionnaires for the 4th edition of Diabetes: The Policy Puzzle will be circulated to you during the second week of March. The Policy Puzzle Team, Elodie Besnier and Mayur Mandalia, look forward to receiving your contributions and working with you to build up the next edition of this reference document for diabetes advocacy in Europe. First-ever EU Summit on Chronic Diseases to be held in Brussels on 3 & 4 April - The summit will discuss medical, social and economic benefits of sustainable investments in health, ways to reduce the burden of chronic diseases, and how to strengthen the prevention and management of chronic diseases, with a focus on EU added value and action. The European Commission opens 23 million EUR call for proposals “Supporting public health institutes” - The Call aims at reinforcing public health institutes in low-income countries in the area of public health decision and policy-making. Partnership with public health institutes and stakeholders is encouraged. Deadline for the concept note submission is 17 March 2014. For more information, click here.
European Network for Ageing and Physical Activity (EUNAAPA) receives support from EU Health Programme - The EUNAAPA network aims to further expand its work to improve the health, wellbeing and independence of older people throughout Europe by promoting physical activity. Read more.
