European Health Ministers adopt Vienna Declaration to combat the rise in obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases - At the WHO European Ministerial Conference on Nutrition and Noncommunicable Diseases in the Context of Health 2020, held in Vienna, Austria on 4-5 July 2013, European Ministers of Health renewed their commitment to combat diet-related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) by adopting the Vienna Declaration, calling for evidence-based solutions from across the Region. The Declaration comitts European countries to address the root causes of obesity and diet-related NCDs, and to empower citizens to make healthy choices. IDF Europe joined forces with 6 other international and European organisations in support of a Joint Statement that was delivered at the Ministerial Conference.
United Nations agree to establish a WHO-led UN Interagency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases - On 22 July, Member States unanimously adopted the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) resolution formally establishing the United Nations Interagency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of NCDs. This resolution was co-sponsored by 110 Member State across all world regions, demonstrating the widespread support for this Task Force. The establishment of the UN Task Force fulfils a commitment in the UN Political Declaration on NCDs, which urged the entire UN system to work together to prevent and control NCDs.The Task Force will coordinate the activities of all UN organizations to implement the WHO Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs 2013-2020, adopted by the World Health Assembly in May 2013.

10th Flagship Course on Health Systems Strengthening. Focus on noncommunicable diseases - WHO Europe will host the 10th Flagship Course on Health Systems Strengthening in Barcelona from 21 to 30 October 2013. The course will focus on how to strengthen health systems to address the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. The programme is opened to both English and Russian speakers. Find out more.

Citizens better protected from cross-border health threats - The European Parliament and Council adopted the Commission proposal for a Decision on serious cross-border threats to health. This is a big step forward in improving health security in the European Union and protecting citizens from a wide range of health threats. The Decision promotes the coordination between national preparedness planning for cross-border threats to health. It also strengthens the risk and crisis management at Union level.
EU Health statistical reports updated - Through close cooperation with the different statistical authorities in Member States (National Statistical Institutes, Ministries of Health, Eurostat has now made more data on health statistics available to the public. European Parliament ENVI committee votes on Tobacco Products Directive - On 10 July, the European Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) committee adopted a series of amendments to the Tobacco Products Directive. These include health warning covering 75% of tobacco packaging and ban of slim cigarettes. The adopted amendments will go through a vote in a plenary session of the European Parliament in September 2013.

DiaEuro 2013, Zadar (Croatia), 26 - 31 August 2013: The Croatian Diabetes Association will be hosting the 2013 edition of the International Football Championship for people with diabetes this Summer. The event will welcome football teams of people with diabetes from all over the world with the aim to raise awareness of diabetes and healthy lifestyles.

3rd IDF Europe Youth Leadership Camp - In July IDF Europe met with inspiring youth advocates from all over Europe. The camp was a great success and we look forward to sharing a report with you in the coming weeks.
In August, IDF Europe looks forward to welcoming Alexandra Costa, who will be joining the IDF Europe team in Brussels for a period of 4 months as MA Exchange staff member.
