Germany: gathering political support to the diabetes cause

Germany3DiabetesDE – German Diabetes Aid successfully targeted policy makers during its World Diabetes Day campaign carried out throughout the last two weeks of November.

A parliamentary breakfast involving multiple stakeholders took place on the morning of 13 November. The evening saw a separate event for politicians and celebrities, and saw the illumination the Brandenburg Gate in Blue, on the eve World Diabetes Day. The lighting of the monument was particularly visible this year, also appearing in the background of primetime live programmes of ZDF, Germany’s public-service television broadcaster.

Germany2To celebrate the establishment of a new regional patient association in Saxonia, a round table event took place on 22 November within the framework of ExPAND, the Policy Action Network on Diabetes led by IDF Europe, bringing together politicians from national and regional authorities, and discussing issues such as support and development of a national diabetes strategy.

On 23 November, DiabetesDE – German Diabetes Aid also hosted its Patient Infotainment Congress, Tackling Diabetes Together, in Leipzig, offering workshops, lectures and debates on a wide range of issues regarding diabetes.

Providing evidence to policy-makers and diabetes advocates, the association also released two reports: the German Health Report Diabetes 2015 on the burden of the diabetes epidemic in the country, as well as a story book Get up, don´t give up, which collects the stories of 30 people living with diabetes.
