Belgium: meeting with ministers to put diabetes high on the agenda

JoVandeurzen gezondontbijtWDDWith the international healthy eating theme for World Diabetes Day, Diabetes Liga - the Flemish Diabetes Association - disseminated this message through multiple routes. Meetings were set up with the regional and national ministers of health, Jo Vandeurzen and Maggie De Block, to once again stress the need put diabetes high on the political agenda, given the recently formed government.

These were largely positive meetings, recognizing ever increasing burden of diabetes and the need for more coordinated action to curb the epidemic.

Support from ministers undoubtedly helped raise awareness of diabetes as it generated press coverage and interviews on national radio channels, allowing Diabetes Liga to reach out to a wider audience.

Besides these activities, the association also organised Diabetes Walks in eight different cities of Flanders to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity, counting more than 2,000 participants.
