Serbia 2 testingWith the warm and sunny weather back, June is the perfect time of the year for the Serbian Diabetes Association to raise awareness of diabetes and sports through a series of outdoors events.

Kicking off a busy month, the association held its Educational Camp for young volunteers of diabetes associations across Serbia from 11 to 16 June. A group of 25 youth advocates from all over the country gathered for a week of seminars and practical workshops on a wide range of topics including campaigning to raise awareness of diabetes, how to engage with the media and peer-to-peer education. Diabetes care and healthy lifestyles were also on the agenda, with several sessions dedicated to insulin treatment and nutrition.

Tijana Milanovic –future IDF Europe Youth Leadership camp participant - and Aleksandar Opacic also shared their experience as youth advocates for diabetes and touched upon their future involvement in the Young Leaders in Diabetes Programme of IDF, as both will be travelling to Melbourne for the World Diabetes Congress early December.

Besides the camp, the Serbian Diabetes Association also ran a “Diabetes Awareness Week” in Zajecar (in city in the eastern part of Serbia). The week started with the opening of a photo exhibition at the Radul Bey Residence art gallery entitled “Belgrade and the world in Blue”, displaying photos of buildings and monument from all over the world lit in blue on World Diabetes Day.
