Meet Nebojsa M. Lalic, new IDF Europe Board Member from Serbia

Nebojsa M. Lalic, MD, PhD, FRCP is a physician, internist and endocrinologist-diabetologist by training who focused his activities on clinical care, research and education in diabetes. Dr Lalic has been engaged in daily clinical practice as a diabetologist for 30 years. He was visiting scientist at Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston, USA, and at present is Director and Head of the Diabetes department at the University Hospital in Belgrade, which is the reference center for diabetes in Serbia, as well as Professor of Internal medicine and Endocrinology and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade.

Dr Lalic is chairman of the National Expert Committee for Diabetes and editor of national guidelines in diabetes. He has over 700 diabetes research publications, 80 of them in peer-review journals. He is a full member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Dr Lalic has advocated for the improvement of lives of people with diabetes for over 20 years. At the national level, these activities were focused on improved access to modern diabetes treatment and prevention of the disease, even in times of economic crisis; improvement and networking in patient education; increasing patient contribution to World Diabetes Day celebrations and national diabetes congresses (2002-2015); establishing platforms for including diabetes into parliamentary discussions and decision-making; and contributing to the government decision to implement the reform of the structure of primary diabetes care (specialized units).

At the international level, he served as faculty member at IDF-supported educational courses and workshops in Europe, Asia and Africa, and as member of the Writing Group for the IDF Guidelines for Postmeal Glucose in 2011. He participated in IDF-supported projects DE-PLAN, IMAGE (type 2 diabetes prevention) and MANAGE CARE (chronic diabetes care).

Dr Lalic feels honoured to serve on the IDF Europe Board and contribute his longstanding professional experience in advocacy, education, research and academia towards improving the lives of people with diabetes not only in Serbia but across Europe - especially in countries challenges with the implementation of modern diabetes care.

He looks forward to work onequal access to modern diabetes care for individual patients; to focus on the implementation of diabetes prevention across Europe; to strengthen ties among Members through sharing best practice and lessons learned; to improve coordination between professionals societies and patients associations; to firmly establish diabetes in parliamentarian activities; and to facilitate joint educational programs and the exchange of educational approaches.
