Stella de Sabata has been active in international cooperation in health – specifically cancer control – for over 15 years. Prior to joining IDF Europe as Regional Manager in September 2015, she worked mainly for the United Nations (International Atomic Energy Agency and International Agency for Research on Cancer/WHO) and umbrella NGOs (Union for International Cancer Control), focusing on project implementation, capacity building and knowledge sharing, as well as advocacy for policy change, including the cross-cutting NCD approach. Stella holds two Master degrees in the humanities from the University of Geneva and has a keen interest in epidemiology.
Stella has lived in a number of countries in Europe as well as in North America and Australia, with lengthy stays in South America. Speaking several languages, she is very culturally considerate and has an inclusive approach in both life and work. In joining IDF Europe, Stella looks forward to engaging with Members and partners to promote diabetes care, prevention and policies that work for patients, healthcare providers and health systems. The challenge and opportunity to interact with European institutions to make a tangible difference in the life of people living with diabetes is a particular source of motivation for Stella.
Favourite quote: “I can resist anything, except temptation” (Oscar Wilde). This is why I try to stay away from toasters, bread and butter!
Hopes for the future: I hope to see – and will certainly promote – more interdisciplinarity and lateral thinking in the professional and political setting, to develop innovative and inclusive ways to address such a complex challenge as diabetes. My previous experience from different professional settings, and a variety of counterparts and stakeholders, will certainly be an asset in this endeavour.
