Members of Parliament across Europe demand action on diabetes

iStock 000014999750XSmallAs part of its campaign to put diabetes high on the European agenda, the European Policy Action Network on Diabetes (ExPAND) has launched its Policy Toolkit on Diabetes. A practical guide to help diabetes champions challenge national governments to raise the profile of diabetes, the toolkit is the first ever comprehensive diabetes resource aimed specifically at helping national Members of Parliament raise diabetes as a policy priority.

The toolkit has been developed by the ExPAND network - an alliance of national MPs from across Europe – in which IDF Europe has played a leading role. It provides a one-stop resource covering the economic case for investment, evidence of what works, and best practice from across Europe and practical steps for leading and developing new diabetes policies fit for purpose. Key topics include prevention, self-management, innovation and person-centred care.  There are also dedicated chapters to care and treatment of children and older people.

The ExPAND network includes parliamentarians, diabetes advocates and other leading opinion formers from across Europe. The network is chaired by Adrian Sanders MP, a British Member of Parliament.  Members include Joao Nabais, (President, IDF-Europe) Teresa Caeiro MP (Portugal), Czeslaw Czechyra MP (Poland), Gagik Galstyan MP (Russia), Martin Gregora MP (Czech Republic) and Georgios Papanikoalou MEP (Greece).  There is also strong representation from diabetes associations from across the region including Spain, Italy and Romania.

Over the coming weeks, ExPAND members will be writing to Members of Parliament across Europe, asking them to join the network and lead the campaign for improved diabetes policy to help stem the rising tide of diabetes and to work with policy makers, professionals and patients to develop and implement sustainable policies for the benefit of people with diabetes in Europe.

You can download a copy of the toolkit here, or write to your local Member of Parliament asking them to join ExPAND. Please note: for full functionality and optimal viewing the pdf should be saved to your computer before viewing.
