Ingredients for a healthy lifestyle: IDF Europe celebrates WDD at the European Parliament

WDD 3With the support of Sarah Ludford MEP, IDF Europe organised a two-week campaign to raise awareness of diabetes on the occasion of World Diabetes Day on the 3 sites of the European Parliament in Brussels and Luxembourg from 11 to 15 November and in Strasbourg from 18 to 22 November.

This year again, IDF Europe renewed its partnership with Sodexo, the catering services of the European Parliament, to raise awareness of diabetes and healthy lifestyle.  The initiative included a healthy, balanced dish (“vitality dish”) on offer at the restaurants of the European Parliament all week, allowing IDF Europe to reach out to several thousand people. Staff eating at the European Parliament’s restaurants also received special placemats with recommendations on healthy lifestyle.

In addition, IDF Europe partnered with the European Parliament’s Sports Centre to organise special sports sessions and encourage people to become more active by giving them free trial cards to access the sports centre facilities and collective sports classes.

WDD 2IDF Europe also had a stand at the European Parliament in Brussels where European Parliament staff and MEPs could learn about diabetes and healthy lifestyles, but also get their blood glucose tested.

On 13 November, a special was brought on the IDF Europe study on Access to quality medicines and medical devices for diabetes care in Europe. The initial findings of the study were indeed discussed and debated with policy-makers and experts at a breakfast meeting in the European Parliament in Brussels.

WDD 1In the afternoon, Sarah Luford MEP and DG Sanco Director General Paola Testori Coggi also hosted the award ceremony of the IDF Europe Prizes in Diabetes, which was followed by a health fruit and vegetable cocktail.
